Do you ever get the feeling that God is calling you to something, but you dismiss that feeling because you’re just a regular girl and what could he possibly need you for right? Do you deep down know that he has more for you but you wonder how you could ever prepare for what’s ahead. Do you ignore that stirring in your soul because how could he ever expect you to be the right girl for this dream. Honey, today is the day you come to understand that he IS calling you, he is asking you, he is nudging you, but ultimately he is also counting on you to respond to his promptings. If there is one thing to know about how God works through his Holy Spirit that dwells within you is that he does not call the equipped, he equips the called. And my sister you are being called!

It is perfectly natural to feel like an amateur in your own life. Let’s face it, each and every day you experience and encounter opportunities, situations and obstacles that you have never ever lived before. It’s not like life is a real life episode of groundhog day where you live the same thing day in and day out…sure life can feel that way when you get stuck in a rut, but it’s certainly not meant to feel like that for long. And even despite feeling like sometimes things never change, in reality they truly always are. Every single day is a brand new day that you have never experienced. Life feels hard and challenging and a struggle some days because the truth is each and every day is new and you haven’t gotten to practice, rehearse or perfect living it. There’s no dress rehearsal girl…this is your life! It’s showtime! So how is it possible to step out into confidence in the direction that God is calling you if you really have no idea if you will fall flat on your face or not. Well the great news is that scripture is jam packed with examples of amateurs, just like you and I who were called to big things, great expectations and mighty works and who were just regular folks too until they responded to the calling that God was prompting them with.

In the book of Genesis we meet Joseph. The youngest sibling in a brood of brothers who is treated poorly by them because they are ultimately jealous of their father’s greater love for Joseph. In this story Joseph is deceived by his brothers, he is made out for dead, sold into slavery and eventually ends up in Egypt in prison. When we first met Joseph he was a young shepherd boy, accustomed to spending solitary time in the fields with his sheep. However if you were to fast forward to the end of this story of Joseph’s life, we learn about his transformation into becoming the second most powerful leader in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh himself. How on earth is that possible? Joseph the shepherd boy, who didn’t have the training, the background, or the experience to became a top leader of the most powerful nation at the time. He was a complete amateur!  But my sister, what we have to clearly see here is that he had God by his side the whole time. That’s what made things possible, that made all the difference for him. He had the Almighty’s hand of favour over him, and guess what…you do to! In fact you have one better now even in that you have God dwelling within you through his Holy Spirit…something that even Joseph at the time didn’t have access to. What is impossible for man is possible with God right…Joseph didn’t resist the steps God was leading him on, he simply trusted and was patient in the process day by day. He spent years in prison, was disowned by his siblings and likely feared for his life on many occasions before the calling that was placed over him came to pass, but through it all he remained faithful to God, through it all he depended on God, and through it all God kept on showing up and walking alongside him. Isaiah 41:10- So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Later on in the book of 1st Samuel we meet another young shepherd boy…this time his name is David and David has no experience as a warrior, no physical features that made him appear intimidating, and had no training in battle. He was a complete amateur in this regard, but girl I know that you know this story and how he fearlessly stepped up to face off with a giant of a man, a fierce warrior named Goliath. There is no doubt that God was with David as he boldly stepped forward when no one else would, and as the absolute underdog defeated this mighty Philistine. I can’t help but wonder if God used David’s experience and expertise as a shepherd to approach this new challenge. David had had to fend off predators and enemies before from his sheep, and I think that the courage that it took to keep his flock safe, is the same courage that stirred his heart that day and compelled him to step forward on behalf of the Isrealites. God was with him as he defended his sheep, and God was with him as he defeated Goliath! And my dear, God is with you too! He knows your weaknesses and your areas of lack and he knows how to perfectly compliment those when you partner with him. 2 Corinthians 12:9 says But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

And our final example of God calling upon complete amateures to put his power on display comes from the new testament. In the gospels we hear about the events that led up to the birth of our saviour Jesus. And we meet a young virgin named Mary. Girls, if God were going to pick the ideal candidate to carry himself in Human form, would you not think he would have selected someone who had some practice being a mom…someone who had already raised children successfully, someone who had the know how and the personal experience of birthing a child. Good grief we would never ever expect him to call upon a complete amateur for this role right. But he did…why? Why would he take such a risk banking on someone who has zero experience. Why; because it’s in the zero experience, in the lack, in the abundance of uncertainty that God can put his best work on display. In our absence of confidence, lives his presence of certainty. What we lack, he has for us. When we second guess, he already knows the outcome of, and where we doubt, he can see our destiny.

Today I challenge you to revisit those stirrings of your heart, to revive those dreams you have been dismissing, to reawaken the hope that dwells within you and to answer the calling that you have been feeling.

You may not yet be equipped, but that’s ok…you are being called, and we know that when God calls, and you respond with a Yes, then he ensures that everything you need to be fully equipped is provided. But he won’t force you to answer…he won’t force you to step forward…he will simply patiently await a yes from you. You may be a complete amateur for the role that God has aligned for you. It might not make any sense to you why God is calling you to this job, but I can’t help but believe that he is calling on you because through you he is going to show a whole slew of other people exactly what he can do when we say Yes to him. Joseph wasn’t equipped to be a top leader in Egypt, David wasn’t equipped to be a mighty warrior, Mary wasn’t equipped to be the mother of our Messiah…that is until till simply said yes to his ask, and he made sure to equip them with exactly what they needed to complete their assigned tasks. It’s through faith that we become equipped. What we need comes from God and without faith we are simply underqualified, under experienced, and the obvious underdog.

So whatever it is that is stirring in your heart, a dream that you’ve been saying no to, an opportunity that seems too scary to try, a longing that you’ve been dismissing, will you ask God to show you if it is from him, and if he reveals that it is, will you simply say yes to him. I can’t even imagine what amazing works he will do through you my sister!
