So as I mentioned this episode is going to continue to explore what we were talking about last week. Last episode we talked about Moses and how as he led over a million people into the desert for a 40 year “adventure of a lifetime”, God faithfully provided a substance called Manna for them to consume daily. This wafer like substance was coined the bread from heaven in the verse from Exodus 16 that we read…do you remember that? Well today my friend we are talking all about bread…bread from heaven, your daily bread, Jesus as the bread of life! If you are a carb crazy gal like I can be…it might just be an episode to listen to as you savour a piece of toast with butter! One of my very favourite indulgences!

I suspect you are someone who worries about the future, worries about how things will turn out and worries if you are doing enough and the right things to ensure that everything goes down smoothly. Do I have your number here? As 21st century women we have all become professional level jugglers haven’t we. Often we balance family, career, managing a household, extracurriculars, aging parents or other relatives, finances, deadlines, health, calendar coordination, faith life, personal growth and generally trying to keep it all together on the daily don’t we? And one thing is certain…you can’t do all of that on an empty tank. More precisely, you can’t possibly do what you have to do today unless you are fueled up on some holy carbs! Let’s jump into our verse to set the scene here. This comes from John 6: 32-35 and this is Jesus speaking…ya’ll know when you see that red font text in your Bible you have to pay extra attention right? This verse is a red one…here Jesus is speaking to a crowd which had gathered to hear him teach… “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.” Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

My sister, are you starving today? Craving peace and certainty in a season that seems so chaotic and turbulent? I want to offer you a little comfort today. Jesus is exactly what you need for today and every single day going forward. He promises to fulfill you in a way that nothing else on the planet can. The enemy often tries to distract us with things that claim that they will fill us. That they will satisfy us, that they will take away the longing we have for more. More contentment, more joy, more peace, more drive, more stability, more energy, more creativity, more resources and the truth is there isn’t a bottle, pill or magic formula that will come anywhere near the provision and preparedness we get when we fill up on our daily bread supplied to us by our our Heavenly Father.

In the Lord’s prayer which Jesus taught during the Sermon on the Mount we recite these words: Give us this day our daily bread…girl recognize that it says this day…not tomorrow’s bread, not next week’s bread…but today’s bread. The provision we need to sustain us through this day of life. Here’s what I’ve learned. The times in my life where I feel the most out of control and overwhelmed are the times when I am trying to provide my own sustenance. The times when I am trying to create my own schedule, determine my own priorities, arrange my own plans, define my own limitations, provide my own solutions and utilize my own energy. That’s exactly when I quickly realize just how ill equipped I am. My sister, when I try to approach a day like this it’s super clear that my schedule is a frazzled mess, my priorities are all out of line, my plans are usually terrible, my limitations are often grossly out of wack, my solutions don’t work, and my energy is far less then I realize. It’s a disaster when I try taking over my life on my own. And I bet yours is too! Are you feeling overwhelmed today, anxious, stressed, scattered, unfulfilled and believing that there has got to be more to life than this? Sounds to me like you are needing some holy carbs.

Know why athletes do a process called carb loading before a big game or endurance event? Because carbs are the first source of fuel that your body looks for when operating physically. Carbs are the easiest way for the body to convert food matter to energy, and when the body is stressed by exertion and maxed out in demand, carbs are what gives the body the boost it needs to finish strong. Jesus is just like that boost for your spiritual self. Not only does he promise to care for our physical needs, but he promises to be the bread of life as well. Remember he told us in John 6:35-“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. The enemy’s distractions simply can’t do this my dear.

I wonder how your life could change if you took a new approach to this day of life. I wonder if a radical transformation could occur simply by adjusting a few things in your daily routine. God’s put a few things on my heart of how things can change if you decide you are ready to change what you are being fueled by today.

What would happen if you gave God the first moments of your day and simply used this time to ask him to fill you up, to dole out the perfect portion of provision that you will need for this day of life. We briefly discussed this last week…but here’s the catch…I want you to ask him to provide you with exactly what you will need for today…in order to live fully the day that he has ready for you! This is the gamechanger! The daily bread that Jesus provides, the bread of life that he is referring to, is made to nourish the body, heart, soul and mind of the one who chooses to surrender to his plans for you. You can’t ask Jesus to give you what you need for today, and then turn away and decide to choose your own adventure…this is a two part equation. He provides the bread, the provision, the nourishment, the energy, the skill, the resources, in abundance and to the exact degree needed…BUT so that his will can be done. My friend I promise you, when you make that tweak in your life your whole life will change.

Try it for a week till we meet here next time and just see if it doesn’t radically change your outlook, mental clarity, contentment, peace…everything. So instead of waking up in the morning, thinking about all the “to do’s” you’ve got…begin with this. Surrender your day back to Jesus. Ask him to guide you according to his will, fill you with exactly what you need to fully live today, ask him to bring about the conversations he needs you to have, the interactions he has destined for you, the tasks he wants you working on, the changes he needs you to make in order to become the woman he has made you to be and ask him for exactly what you need to make it all happen according to his plans. From the outside it may look like nothing is different…it might be the same chaos, the same messy situation, the same difficult season, but on the inside everything will begin to change. Your hunger for fullfillment will begin to disappear because only he has the ability to provide true contentment to your heart, and for the bread of life you’ll no longer feel hungry.

Starting the day in prayer and surrender, thanking him for all he has provided you with so far, and asking for his will over your life today is the first step, but there is more to fuel up on than just this. Ensuring that each day you have a chance to also fill up on his promises, and scripture is the very place where you can feast till your soul is content! Scripture helps to build the trust we need to keep surrendering day after day. Learning about what God says about you, and how faithful he has been helps us to know how loved we really are. He wants to provide for you, he wants to guide you and he wants to fill you, and he wants to give you what you need one day at a time. He won’t give you today what you are going to need next month…we aren’t there yet. He won’t give you less than you require, and he won’t give you too much either…perfectly portioned and measured out for the day he has aligned for you. So if things never seem to go your way…if you always seem to burn out before the finish line, if you are exhausted, overwhelmed and feeling unsettled, then it’s more than likely because you have been tricked into believing that you can do this on your own and that you simply need things to change to your liking in order for it to work out the way you’d like. What if instead you changed your source of fuel…your source of food…your source of provision, and turned first to the one who made you, the one who knows you and the one who wants to bring you into your full potential today! What do you think…those Holy Carbs sure sound good don’t they?
